Domestic First Animal Trial of Liquid Nitrogen Spray Cryoablation for COPD Published Internationally

    Recently, the animal trial literature on the domestically pioneering "spray cryoablation" technique—applied to the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—conducted by the team of Professor Wang Changhui at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, was successfully published in the journal Clinical and Translational Medicine. The paper is titled "Safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of a novel spray cryotherapy technique in a canine model".

    The spray cryoablation system delivers liquid nitrogen to the cryo-tip of the catheter, inducing a precipitous drop in surface temperature that freezes target tissues and ablates pathological cells. This marks the first long-term, systematic in vivo animal study of spray cryotherapy conducted in China.


    In this study, animals subjected to spray cryoablation were followed up for three months. The results demonstrated no active bleeding immediately post-procedure, with no occurrence of severe complications or mortality. Pathological examination revealed minimal damage to basal cells following cryospray application. Notably, the injury activated epithelial stem cells during the early phase, facilitating rapid wound healing characterized by swift differentiation, proliferation, re-epithelialization, and tissue normalization without scar formation. Significant epithelial regeneration was observed as early as postoperative day two; by day 30, the bronchial mucosa had returned to normal, exhibiting no signs of congestion, edema, or scarring.


    These findings indicate that spray cryotherapy is both safe and effective, offering the distinct advantages of rapid, controlled epithelial ablation without subsequent scar tissue formation. This study provides novel insights and establishes a theoretical foundation for the interventional management of COPD. Building upon these animal trial results, SensCure, in collaboration with the team at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, will advance to clinical trials to conduct more rigorous and systematic investigations.
