To comprehensively showcase the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advancements in digestive endoscopy, standardize clinical protocols for minimally invasive resection, and elevate China's endoscopic care standards, the Shanghai International Digestive Endoscopy Symposium & 15th China-Japan ESD Summit Forum was successfully convened at the Shanghai International Convention Center from April 7–9, 2023. As the first and largest in-person gathering of the digestive endoscopy community in China post-pandemic, the three-day congress attracted over 3,000 attendees, including 2,000 registered delegates, marking a triumphant return to academic exchange.

Organized by leading institutions including the Endoscopy Center of Zhongshan Hospital (Fudan University), the Fudan University Institute of Endoscopy, the Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Digestive Endoscopy, and the Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Technology, and co-hosted by academic societies such as the NOTES Subgroup of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the Beijing Health Promotion Association, the symposium served as a premier platform for global experts. The convergence of domestic and international luminaries fostered deep discussions on cutting-edge technologies, driving the field forward.

In the Academician Forum, Academician Li Zhaoshen shared Changhai Hospital's extensive clinical experience in managing chronic pancreatitis. He elaborated on the disease from multiple perspectives, including epidemiology, basic research, etiological studies, and natural disease progression. Academician Fan Xianqun presented on the model and clinical trials of robotic-assisted orbital surgery. He emphasized that advancing ophthalmic surgical techniques is an urgent priority, highlighting the critical importance of novel precision navigation technologies in orbital surgery and the application of endoscopic techniques for minimally invasive orbital procedures. Academician Fan Jia delivered an in-depth exploration of liver cancer research, focusing on four key pillars: developing novel early diagnostic technologies, identifying new predictive biomarkers for metastasis and recurrence, refining the molecular classification system for hepatocellular carcinoma, and exploring holistic, full-course treatment models.

The symposium adopted a hybrid format of academic lectures and live procedural demonstrations. Eighteen sub-forums were convened outside the main venue, hosting hundreds of presentations through symposia, panel discussions, live demonstrations, and case studies. A total of 50 live surgeries were performed. Notably, the congress debuted the "Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Session on Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma," marking its first inclusion. The gathering of renowned digestive and endoscopic experts from China and abroad comprehensively showcased new concepts, technologies, trends, and achievements in the field, offering an unparalleled academic feast for the global medical community.

    Live Procedural Demonstrations

The conference featured extensive live surgical demonstrations. Over 20 leading interventional experts—including Professors Zhou Pinghong, Chai Ningli, Xu Meidong, Ling Tingsheng, Xiao Jun, and Zhang Qide—performed a full spectrum of endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ERCP, EUS, and ESD. Through real-world clinical cases, these experts demonstrated the latest endoscopic techniques and their practical applications. During the demonstrations, the operators provided detailed commentary on key technical steps and challenges, and offered thorough answers to questions from the audience.
